How About a Dental Crown This Christmas!

How About a Dental Crown This Christmas!

A crown is a permanent “cap” that is placed over a tooth that has been treated for decay or breakage. They are usually made of porcelain, gold, or a combination of both materials. When a crown is used to close off a tooth after root canal therapy, it is called a “dental post.” It completely covers the tooth above the gum line, restoring its shape, size, and strength.

How is a Dental Crown Placed?

Dental posts take two appointments to complete. During the first appointment, the dentist will take impressions and measurements of the tooth. This information will then be sent to an outside laboratory, where the crown will be constructed over the course of a few weeks. At the second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent one will be placed over the tooth. It will fit perfectly because it is custom-created just for you!

What Are the Benefits of Getting A Dental Crown?

Improved appearance. Perhaps the most obvious benefit of getting a crown is the fact that they’ll improve the appearance of your teeth! If you’re suffering from tooth decay or a cavity, your affected tooth may be discolored or misshapen. Getting a porcelain crown will completely cover up the damaged tooth so that you can leave our office with a bright and healthy smile.

Protection from further damage. Dental crowns are often placed over teeth that are cracked or chipped in order to protect them from further harm and damage, as well as to restore normal function to the mouth. Cracked teeth and broken fillings can be painful and even dangerous to your overall health if they go untreated. But if you get a dental crown right away, you can prevent the problem from getting any worse.

Filling in gaps between teeth. If you have a large gap between your two front teeth or if your molars are crooked, getting a dental crown can help fill these unsightly gaps in your smile and improve your overall look.

Increased comfort. If you have a missing tooth, you may have a hard time chewing and eating certain foods. Plus, having a gap in your smile can cause pain in your jaw joints, and a dental crown can correct this problem by filling in the empty space in your mouth.

Decreased sensitivity. Root canal therapy can be incredibly effective at treating serious toothaches. However, you may need to get a dental crown following the procedure in order to restore full functionality and comfort to your mouth.
