Gum Disease Treatment in Edmond

Do Your Part to Help Prevent Periodontal Disease

Gum disease is amazingly prevalent in our society. It's estimated that up to 80% of us have some form of it and most of us are unaware.

Periodontal disease is a persistent bacterial infection around one tooth or many and produces a number of symptoms, such as:

  • Swollen gums
  • Dark buildup between your teeth
  • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
  • Constant bad breath
  • Loose teeth

Although daily home treatment and removal of oral bacteria and plaque is essential, at the office of Dr. Monica Neely, we don't spend our time nagging you to floss. We just want you to understand that 40% of your tooth surfaces are between the teeth, and we want to help you get to those areas.

Our Edmond gum disease prevention services can help improve your dental health immensely. Contact Monica Neely, DDS today to schedule an appointment.

Count on Our Help in Your Battle Against Gum Disease

One of your best strategies against gum disease is to stay on top of the situation. Regular checkups increase the odds of early detection and your chances for conservative, non-surgical treatments. We'll check the pocket around each tooth to ensure it is shallow and free of tartar, food particles, and bacteria. When pockets fill up with these threats, you can experience a progressive breakdown of tissue and bone.

Treating Healthy Gums & Stained Teeth

If your gums are healthy but you have stained teeth, we'll air polish the teeth to remove the stains. We use a powder formula that helps desensitize the root of the tooth. We also can use a more traditional prophy paste.

Addressing Gingivitis & Preventing Further Issues

If your gums show signs of gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease, we'll use your initial appointment to remove the buildup with ultrasonics and therapeutic rinses. For two weeks, you'll use an antibacterial rinse at home, and then you'll return to the office for an air polishing. We'll determine at that time whether you should return every six months for cleaning or come in more often to remove bacteria and the buildup of tartar.

Dealing with Active Periodontal Disease

If your condition continues to worsen and the pockets around your teeth grow deeper, we'll numb your mouth and remove the bacteria through a process called scaling and root planing. We'll also apply ultrasonic technology to further remove tartar, plaque, and bacteria. Afterward, we'll help you find an effective cleaning technique that you can use at home.

Home care may include changes in your diet, the use of vitamins, oral rinses, probiotics, and xylitol. Because the bacteria in your gum pockets will return, we'll recommend that you come in for maintenance every three months.
