Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is a condition where the muscles and joints of the jaw become tense, causing pain and discomfort in the jaw. This condition affects the TMJ and can also cause headaches, earaches, and neck and shoulder pain.
Bruxism is a condition where one grinds and clenches their teeth while sleeping. This condition can lead to TMJ, which causes a disruption in the jaw muscles and the muscles that are connected to them.
Causes of TMJ and Bruxism
TMJ is a condition where the jaw becomes tense, causing pain and discomfort in the jaw. The underlying cause of TMJ is muscle tension in the jaw and other facial areas. TMJ is sometimes caused due to an injury to the muscle or by an issue with the joints of the jaw.
Bruxism is sometimes caused due to stress or anxiety. It may also be caused as a result of side effects from certain medications.
Symptoms of TMJ and Bruxism
TMJ may cause severe pain and discomfort in your entire face. It may also cause shoulder pain and headaches that may be accompanied by pain in your jaw. In addition to this, TMJ may cause earaches, frequent headaches, neck pain, ringing in your ears, or other painful conditions.
Bruxism may cause your teeth to become worn down over time. It may also contribute to headaches as well as tooth loss or other costly dental procedures. It may also lead to facial lines, which are deep grooves on your forehead, eyes, and cheeks.
Treatment for TMJ and Bruxism
TMJ is treated using several methods such as medications, mouthguards (intraoral devices), physical therapy, etc.
Similarly, tooth grinding can be treated using night guards (bruxism appliances), medications that relax your jaw muscles or nerves that control your jaw movement, or other devices such as night guards to prevent you from grinding or clenching your teeth while you sleep.
Our team at Monica Neely DDS can diagnose your TMJ or bruxism issues and offer suitable treatment as per your requirement.
